South to Edinburgh

John Knox's House, Royal Mile, EdinburghEdinburgh is Scotland's great capital, celebrated the world over for its history, its culture and its International Festival.

Nowhere in Europe is there a more vibrant capital city, with its centre dominated by the Castle majestically perched on its rock, with Princes Street Gardens below and the backdrop of Calton Hill and Arthur's Seat to the east; nor are there many streets more notable than the old High Street, which slopes gently downhill from the gates of the Castle, past the new Scottish Parliament to the gates of the Palace of Holyrood - the famous Royal Mile.

Edinburgh Castle dates from 1076 when St Margaret, wife of King Malcolm Canmore, built a small chapel on the rock. Today, it is the most visited attraction in Scotland. A gun is still fired at one o?clock every day from the ramparts, providing the citizens of Edinburgh with a novel means by which to check their watches.

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo takes place in the dramatic setting of the Castle Esplanade each year and is one of the most dramatic entertainment experiences Britain has to offer.

Other attractions include the Royal Museum of Scotland, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh Zoo and the Royal Botanic Garden.

Pitcairlie is about an hour's drive of Edinburgh, or you can travel by train from Cupar, arriving at Waverley Station in the very heart of the city, a short walk from all the central attractions including Princes Street, the Royal Mile and the Castle.
